Escape to a dream-like Mexico for one special night at LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil’s 38th original production LUZIA takes you to an imaginary Mexico, like in a waking dream, where light quenches the spirit and rain soothes the soul. Whether it’s through the mesmerizing rain curtain, the massive rotating disk that represents the sun and the moon, the jaw-dropping acrobatics or the vibrant costumes, the tableaux of LUZIA weaves an intricate, contemporary mosaic that awakens the senses and transports you to a place suspended between dreams and reality.
LUZIA is the longest running Cirque du Soleil show in Toronto at over 11 weeks and features eye-catching acts such as hoop diving on treadmills, cyr wheel and trapeze, hand balancing, aerial straps, contortion and more. What makes LUZIA unique as a big top show is the integration of water, which presented a technical challenge for the show creators as the water must be filtered, disinfected and maintained at a constant temperature of 28 degrees Celsius for the well-being of the performers. Over the course of one show 6,000 litres (1,585 gallons) of water is used — all of which is recycled for the entire duration of a stay in a given city!
The show on its own is captivating, but if you want to escape even further into this imaginary Mexico, the VIP Experience at Cirque du Soleil is your answer. The VIP Package includes access to the VIP Suite, which has a gourmet food station courtesy of Toronto-based Treeline Catering. You can delve into the flavours of Mexico with an assortment of canapés such as Mojito Shrimp Ceviche, Potatas Bravas, Carnita Tacos and Curry Coconut Chicken Empanadas, all while sipping on a premium selection of wine and beer. Of course, who could forget dessert? A mountain of warm Chocolate Churros will be calling your name. VIP’s also have a dedicated entrance to the show so no long line-ups plus an added bonus of complimentary popcorn, a special swag bag, reserved parking and private VIP restrooms.
As you take in your surroundings, you’ll notice the décor of the VIP Suite is reminiscent of a Mexican plaza with warm colours and gigantic video projections of Papel Picado, a decorative craft that involves cutting elaborate designs in paper or silk, projected on large silk wings hanging from the ceiling. Papel Picado is generally displayed for secular or religious occasions and commonly represents birds, floral designs and skeletons. The virtual Papel Picado in the VIP Suite features various narrative elements and characters from LUZIA including a horse, a field of flowers, a flock of hummingbirds, a plaza, a cenote, a cave, raindrops, a storm, the sun, a city and desert cacti.
In the Big Top, your premium VIP seats are situated a stone’s throw from the stage and for two and a half extraordinary hours, you will travel deep into a magical, Mexican-inspired tableaux that unfolds like a dream before your eyes.
LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil runs at the Toronto Port Lands until October 16. Tickets are available at https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/luzia.
