Cocktail of the Week: Thompson Hotel’s The Rough Cut
Sip on a refreshing cocktail inspired by the best of TIFF’s lineup.

Inspired by A Star is Born, the highly-anticipated TIFF movie that marks Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, Rough Cut gets its name from the rough cut of ice the cocktail is built over.
In this fourth remake following the 1937, 1956, and 1976 versions, the film stars Cooper as a kind-hearted but haunted musician who discovers talent in the stage-averse struggling artist Ally, played by Lady Gaga. The film is already generating Oscar buzz after its Venice Film Festival premiere. In the film, Lady Gaga’s character is slightly rough around the edges, but refines as the film goes on, just like the block of ice will smooth out as the drink is nursed. Included in the ice is a slice of starfruit which reveals itself, like Ally’s hidden talents, as the ice melts.
This light, southern take on an old fashioned is one of four drinks in the Thompson Hotel’s TIFF-inspired cocktail lineup. The three others, also based on high-wattage films, will be available to try out during the festival at the hotel.
